Adventure Ahead | Old Time Radio

In 1944, NBC wanted a show for younger audiences, not for little kids, but more for those coming of age. That was the impetus for this old time radio great, Adventure Ahead. Although Adventure Ahead was intended for all audiences, it was geared for young men.

All of the plots were from famous adventure fiction writers, and they all starred or were intended for boys. Some of the well known writers were Daniel Defoe, Steven Vincent Benet, and Waldo Fleming. The stories and plots were adventures that any red blooded American boy could only dream of. For example, one of the stories, 'Inside The FBI' which gives a good guided tour of the inner workings of that much admired institution, and by the way with J. Edgar Hoover's blessing, as Hoover was a firm believer in molding America's youth.

Other great stories include Biscuit Eater, the famous story of a boy who finds a young pup in a well. Also in this series is 'Hill Lawyer' which is an inspirational story of small town human relations. Well, in Adventure Ahead, all the stories are good. They all hit the mark of capturing the mind of adolescent boys. The show was popular also with the dads. This was an old time radio show that father and son could listen to together, and both be entertained and inspired.

Because Adventure Ahead started running right after D-Day, there are references to the war, and the effort on the home front. Adventure Ahead was only scheduled for 14 episodes, and we're lucky to have all but three episodes left. Plus they're very good quality shows. In Adventure Ahead there are no recurring characters, and the on air talent was all journeymen old time radio actors. This show was more about the story than the guys behind the mic. As happens with a lot of old time radio shows that were aimed at a juvenile audience, they are now making a comeback with adult listeners as well. This is a great adventure show that boys of all ages will like.
