Archie Andrews | Old Time Radio

One of the most beloved teenage characters of the time, Archie Andrews! Along with all of his pals, Jughead, Veronica, Reggie, and Betty.

Created in 1941 by Vic Bloom and Bob Montana, Archie Andrews was the typical teenage boy. He lived in the fictional town of Riverdale. In the comic strip he was the only son of Mary and Fred Andrews and was the typical 17 year old boy of the time. Archie Andrews was well mannered, but known to be a klutz. And, like most 17 year old boys, he was girl crazy.

Making Archie Andrews into an old time radio show was a natural, because the comic was so well loved. Starting in 1943 this old time radio comedy hit home. He was the teenage boy we all loved and wanted our kids to be. Involved in school, polite, well mannered.

His zaniest episodes is when he let his love life get out of control. He had two main squeezes, Veronica Lodge, and Betty Cooper, but it was Veronica who he was really nuts about. The other recurring characters in Archie Andrews old time radio were his friends Jughead Jones, Dilton Doiley, Moose Mason, and Chuck Clayton. There was also Reggie Mantle, although he was a friend, he was also Archie's rival in athletics and love.

Archie Andrews other interest besides girls was his jalopy car, and sports. He was an athlete for Riverdale high and played baseball, basketball, and football. A template for other old time radio situation comedies, Archie Andrews was recorded before a live audience. And sometimes that audience got pretty wound up!

It's estimated that close to 600 shows, that sounds a little on the high side because the old time radio show ran 10 years, but for lack of other proof, we'll accept that number. Archie Andrews was a very good sitcom that both juveniles and adults like, but like a lot of other old time radio shows, just a fraction still exist today.

There was quite a bit of shuffling for the actors playing in all of the shows. Archie himself was portrayed by four different actors, and then there was a revolving door for all the rest pretty much. The scripts were the backbone of this series, not the actors. Although there were not very many famous names in Archie Andrews they were all journeymen old time radio actors and did their parts well.

The Archie Andrews character was made into Movies, Old Time Radio Shows, Comic Books, and TV shows. There is still quite a bit of interest in Archie today, as there are numerous Archie fan clubs, hobbyist sites, discussion boards, etc. It just shows that good comedy is timeless. Each show is just under 30 minutes long, and I have 50 of them on one MP3 CD. You'll like this one!
  • Archie Andrews is timeless comedy.
  • The old time radio show is just as enjoyable as the comics!
