Theater Five Radio

The golden age of radio was long gone when Theater Five Radio started in 1964. In fact you can barely call this one old time radio!

Theater Five was a last ditch attempt by ABC to capture what was left of the waning market share. By 1964 everyone had a TV, well, almost everyone. But ABC not only felt there was still a market, they actually put quite a bit of effort and money into this series.

One thing to mention first about Theater Five is the quality of the show. Not just in terms of audio quality, but production, writing, etc. There are two samples to listen to, to give you a better idea of how good this show was. Another mention is that Theater Five is similar to Mutual Radio Theater, where the genre of the show changes all the time. There is a slight predominance of horror and suspense type shows, but there's also a good mix of comedy, crime, human interest, etc. You won't get bored with Theater Five Radio. It's almost like getting 5 or 6 different radio shows. Each story is stand alone, and there are no recurring characters.

The announcer was the famous Fred Foy, one of the best voices in old time radio. Each show is just over 20 minutes long. There's great acting, writing, and very polished sound effects in this overlooked old time radio show. The only reason Theater Five Radio doesn't get it's due is timing. Most, if not all old time radio collectors agree that this was a superb show. It's just that it made it's debut in 1964!

The name of the show Theater Five is derived from it's timeslot, 5pm, and it ran Mon-Fri., so not only did Theater Five Radio start 20 years too late, it also ran at 5pm. Maybe they were trying to get the afternoon drive traffic. It's pretty certain that there were 260 episodes aired, and we have 256 of them, just shy of the complete run. The good news is that we offer the finest quality episodes of this show in existence.

If you get the MP3 CD set it consists of 4 MP3 CDs. If you prefer regular audio CDs we are able to fit 3 episodes on each CD. So that means you can order up to 85 Regular Audio CDs of this old time radio show, and each CD will have 3 unique episodes on it.

This is a very worthwhile show to add to any collection, the ONLY reason it's not one of the more popular old time radio shows is because of timing. But here's your chance to get one of the better radio shows we all love.
